Should I be able to move around (although in a huge amount of pain) with a broken hip or would I pretty much have to be dragged around?

depends on the break Dean.

If it's a crack...then lots of pain...but movable.
If it's a break...then probably would not have the range of motion you're used to.

did you recently have a fall? or did something hit you?

A hip would not break without contact...though it may dislocate, or you could have arthritis.

The way the barometer has been flying up and down this week...anyone with arthritis is probably writing in pain.

Sunday morning I was asleep and my son woke me up around 4am because he had an ear ache. I woke with a start and shooting pain in my lower back/hip. Felt about like being stabbed and the knife being twisted (yes I do know, dont ask unless you are willing to look at the scar.. and trust me you dont want to see the scar). Any weight on my leg was pretty close to the same thing. It comes and it goes since then. Right now its only a gentle throb. Last night I could not even bend properly to sit down for about 2 hours straight and walking was excruciating as well. Moving the leg in certain positions makes it alot better... or alot worse.
so Dislocated hip perhaps?

heh... 500mb of naproxen and a couple of robaxacet numbed the pain ( and made my face all tingly) enough last night for me to sleep a decent night sleep. As long as I dont stand up using the left leg first it seems to be okay for now. If I need to I can pretty much cross the street and catch one of the buses to the miz.. its still the "urgent" care place right?

actually...sounds more like a pinched nerve

something broken would generally be constant unbearable pain...not fluctuating depending on position.

a pinched nerve though could cause what you're describing...and it could be your muscles had relaxed when sleeping, and as you woke and turned quickly...a muscle & nerve got lodged into the joint...or pulled across it.

for a pinched nerve...what's worked for me...is to hyperextend my joint in whatever direction i can...this seems to pull it tight and pop it back into place...but then it just hurts (throbs) for about an hour after.

Could it be bursitis? I recently began enjoying that little condition in my shoulder. At least I think it is bursitis. Hurts like bloody hell whenever I make certain movements

Depending on how you "jerked" your body awake and if the pain is radiating not only up and down you leg but also your spine it could be muscle/nerve related. When you twisted awake do you remember feeling a snap or cracking sound? And if the naproxen and robaxacet made things feel better may be more muscle than bone as these meds generally don't help for bone pain. You should see about it before it gets worse.
And I agree with Ages, right now my rheumatoid arthritis is extremely active and painful, so much so I had to see the rheumatologist for the first time in 10 years last week because I couldn't manage the pain with all my resources.

I was thinking nerve... but usually there is no specific spot when I have a nerve pinched in my back. I got my wife to poke around last night at one point when it was not too bad and it was near the top of the hip.. I guess it could be nerve but I will get to a doctor soon enough.

As to not helping with bone pain... well after taking as much as I did last night I was not feeling much of anything after a while so I am not certain thats a qualifier of bone or muscle

You need to go to the doc and get the good stuff! I take 6mg of Hydromorph Contin every 8 hours for a double disc herniation and a pinched sciatic nerve.

Or you could have a dr like I have and he'll tell you to take Advil.

It does sound like a muscle spasm or a nerve thingy. Those will usually be fine in a week or so no matter what you do I found.

If your hip was broken, I don't think you would be able to type all those posts above. You would be too busy screaming!

Definately sounds muscular rather than bone related. Maybe a Chiropractor or a Massage Therapist could help you?

heh.. I can take quite a freakin lot of pain that most people find disabling. But yeah, definately thinking not broken.. maybe cracked at the most, but probably nerve related... gonna be a long wait at the doctors office me thinks.
