UFC champ Brock Lesnar slams Canadian health care but ready to fight this summer

UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar announced his "miracle" recovery from a career-threatening digestive disease Wednesday while slamming the health care he received in Canada after falling sick during a hunting trip.

Lesnar said his U.S. doctors were "dumbfounded" at his success in beating diverticulosis and avoiding major surgery to remove part of his colon.

"They couldn't find any signs of any problem in my stomach. It's just a miracle," the mixed martial arts star said Wednesday on a sports news station in his first interview since falling ill.

LOL, Manitoba has 3rd world health care. That's what you get with socialized health care, especially poorly managed socialized health care.

And yet Canada has a higher average life expectancy than Americas, even with their superior health care.

probably because we dont take nearly as much steriods.

And this morning, the Minister of Health, Theresa Oswald entered the fray in defence of the health care system calling it a partisan political statement on Lesnar's part.

So, who has more credibility, a steroid pumped up, muscle head or an NDP minister....I call this one a draw.

I'd go with the 'muscle head' myself.

Our government seems to think the more buildings for bureaucrats and pencil pushers they build, the better the system.

We need doctors, nurses and more machines. Not office people.

Taking Lesner seriously................. he has no problem mentioning he went to Bismarck ND for medical. Bismarck happens to be a major city in ND so has a major hospital. He most likely was at a local community hospital in either Manitoba or Saskatchewan that has limited services. It's like comapring a northern nursing station to HSC. All I can say to Lesner is stay at home if you are sick. Or maybe you wouldn't have gotten sick if you weren't a roid junkie in the first place. No sympathy for him what so ever from me. I hope for the sake of all Americans that Obama's health care reform works. It will still be a two tiered system, but at least the poor will receive better care than they do now.

But we really don't yet know all of the facts yet. I understand a piece of equipment was not working. That will happen. I suppose the very same piece of equipment could have failed in Bismarck as in Brandon.

That said, our government does not really think about preventative maintenance do they? Just look at our infrastructure...

Giving him food to eat when he had a hole in his stomach is way, way, over the top.

Problem is, they probably had one doctor on call who had been on call for 24 hours non-stop, while having 150 file clerks working away in some office tower....

Actually, if you read all his statements rather than just the headline "It's like a Thrid World system" you'll find he was actually pretty level headed in his comments in my opinion. A lot of his comments could even be viewed as complimentary:

""I love Canada. I own property in Canada but if I had to choose between getting care in Canada or the United States, I definitely want to be in the United States. Canadians, don't get me wrong here. Listen I love Canada, some of the best people and best hunting in the world. I have family up there. But I wasn't at the right facility. And it makes sense for me to say that."

"I think it was just under the circumstance the hospital that I was at, it wasn't their fault. They had some machinery that wasn't working that couldn't do its job. And I needed to have it done. So we went to where we could have it done."

"I'm not bashing the Canadian health care, I'm not bashing it at all. I'm a U.S. citizen,. It just so happens I was in Canada. If I would have been in Thailand or Puerto Rico, I would want to get back to the United States, in my homeland, to get my health care."

So I don't really see what the big deal was about. Considering the fact that he's a 285lb steroided up muscle head, his comments are pretty fair in my opinion. He was just giving his opinion of the situation and it seemed like a fair one given the fact that the key piece of equipment he needed was not functioning at the hospital he was at.

To answer the question. should we care what he says?

Yes and no.

no in that he is an idiot that does not even know what he is saying.

Yes in that... damn his words can influence one hell of a lot of MORONS that were perhaps thinking of coming to Canada but now will not because they dont know how to think for themselves

Today they are reporting that Lestner admitted, the bit about 3rd world, was said because he is opposed to Obama's Socialized health care.

Like I said he was at a community hospital that is not fully equipped like an HSC or St Bonifce would be. I realize the Brandon is one of Manitoba's larger cities but their hospital is still considered a community hospital. There are only 2 major hospitals in this province and they are both in Winnipeg. That is the unfortunate thing about the way our health system is set up.

Just a cheap stunt by the sounds of it.....the guy's a douche......granted he could turn me into a pretzel in half a second if he really wanted to....he's still a douche.

Keep your U.S. political B.S. south of the border where it belongs....if he really had bad service, that's one thing, for sure, complain, lets get to the bottom of it, I have no issue...but to make that kind of statement just to take a potshot... ....that's a pretty big douchebag!

Douche or not, if you've ever been involved with our hospital system, you'd know he was telling the truth...it's the hugest vacuum in the world, it sucks so badly.

I've been involved with our hospital system. Does 35 years ago count? It was great back then. The staff were caring and worked very hard. I believe the staff still work very hard and still care very deeply.

I suspect your axe is a little more specific eh JTF???

Here is my experience with the passionately disgruntled...

They have had a very sad singular personal experience. Then they attach that one experience to the entire system.

Now don't take my head off. This is my experience.

I've had all positive experiences also, including getting an MRI this past summer in 6 weeks. Also the birth of both of my children went very smoothly both times.

The only time I've needed serious emergency treatment the system worked flawlessly. The staff at HSC were wonderfull, and I was treated extremely quickly, had a CT scan within 30 minutes of arrival, patched up and sent home within 5 hours of arrival with a serious head injury (luckily not too serious in the long run). Other times in the past dealing with the ER the wait times have been considerably longer, but none of my previous injuries were life threatning either (broken bones, stitches etc.).Personally I dont mind waiting 3 or 4 hours for stitches or xrays if it means someone having a heart attack get's the treatment they need. Overall I'd say the triage system at our ER's works like it's supposed to. Life threatning injuries get priority, then loss of limb, then everything else.

Overall, most of my health care experiences have been pretty decent. I think that part of that comes from a conversation I had with my doctor years ago. He pointed out to me that "Medicine is not an exact science/" I appreciated the comment and have kept it in mind anytime I deal with health care providers.

The way I see it, there are 2 things which hinder our system, bureacracy and unions. While there has to be an administrative system to support front line service, the layers of bullshit are taking too much money away from primary service delivery. And as far as the unions, well, I think that they have outlived their usefulness in most areas, and health care is one of them.

And don't get me started about emergency rooms!!!

not surprising that he would say that about our system. our system is a mess, its underfunded and mismanaged.

take a guy like lesnar who is used to being able to pay for whatever treatment or procedure he wants and getting it immediately and our system would definitely seem third world.

(lesnar is still a douche and i cant wait to see him lose his next heavyweight fight, but not just because of these comments )
