Okay, so what should the new team be named if not the "Jets"?

Personally, I'd really like the name to be the Jets. I wonder how quickly Winnipeggers would embrace another name? Would be fun to watch that evolve. Winnipeg truly does have an emotional investment in the Jets...

Winnipeg Bears?
Winnipeg Warriors? (I like this name)
Manitoba ??? (I'd hate it if the team were called the Manitoba ???)

Jets is owned by the league why change the it from what we have save money and call them the Moose , no new uniforms to buy .

I think a new name should be adopted. The Jets will always be a part of Winnipeg, but in our past. And we are always told not to dwell on the past, only to look towards the new future. Oh, and keep it to the Winnipeg somethings.

Here is to a new team and a name!

Well, back in '96 when there was talk about a new 'name/logo' for the jets - I thought Winnipeg Pride, with a charging group of lions as the logo. But that's pretty cheesy.

As long as we have the NDP in power we could call them the commie bastards!

Seriously - I like Jets, but if not then I think it should be something that harkens back to the hockey tradition of the city. What about Winnipeg Warriors? Or Winnipeg Falcons ( 1924 Olympic medal team)?

Are the Mosse not controlled by Vancouver/Canucks. I don't think that's up for grabs. Jets is the way to go. If not - Warriors.

Almost guaranteed it will have an Aboriginal name so may as well agree on Warriors now. Unless of course they deem it offensive and threaten to sue (the Indians). Isn't there already a lawsuit going? Blackhawks I think (one of the Indian names anyway). Actually that was the Braves I think.

But what if they "demand" that they be called the Winnipegosis Spirits or the Winnipeg Elders etc etc? Actually, they wouldn't have to demand it - our NDP government would make it happen for them somehow. One poorly written letter by one of the chiefs/thugs to the Province and cc'd to the City, claiming that the arena is built on "traditional lands" will get the ball rolling nicely.

Jets could be used, if granted permission by the rights holder. I suspect that if a new Winnipeg NHL team owner wanted to use the Jets name the NHL would grant him that right. I also suspect it would be granted at a relatively low cost.

I also recall Bettman saying that the name could only ever again be used in Winnipeg. Who would want to use that name elsewhere in the NHL?
