There was a time, about 10 years ago, that one could barely find a Tim Hortons in the greater Vancouver area. You had to drive to the outskirts, and they were always empty. Starbuckses graced every corner, every spare lot, every available inch of non-ALR space as far as the eye could see. On Robson street, there was even one block that had no less than 4 Starbucks locations, two of which were kitty-corner. Asking someone to meet you at Starbucks used to require a team of negotiators and GPS devices, because nobody knew just how many might be in a given area in a single day. The trendy-folk would shun the Starfucks, and head to what was promising to be the next great thing: Krispy Kreme.
Slowly, the Starbucks Megalopolygarchy receded, and plucky little Timmy Ho/Esso locations started springing up here and there. Then they morphed into TimHoWendys locations. Then...they mutated into vast numbers of solo franchise locations, much like everywhere in Ontario. Today, one cannot swing a proverbial cat and not hit at least two Timses. As for Krispy Kreme, they never did get the foothold in the market, and have a single, sad location in Surrey, where even angels fear to tread.
