just listening to an advertisement on the radio.

They are suggesting gift certificates because you dont really know what (and they listed a bunch of people ) would want. People like your babysitter.

So.. who do you buy gifts for? Garbagemen? Babysitter? Mailman??

neighbour?

I buy for my kids (of course), my Dad, my kids godparents and the neighbour. The hubby and I don't exchange @ x-mas instead we buy something for the house. Last year we bought new front loading washer & dryer and this year we'll be purchasing a new TV for the living room.

Good idea, I think I'll try to convince my wife of that idea. We need a snowblower.

No one. Our family stopped buying presents a few years ago.

This. The kids get enough *stuff* from their Oma & Opa, and my brother and his wife. Hubby and I don't get anything for each other. None of the adults in my family exchange gifts. Occasionally I bake things and give them to people, but more often than not, the extent of my giving is Christmas Cards. I don't feel obliged, and I don't like to participate in purchasing junk for the sake of a holiday. We buy what we want year round.

ETA: Last year, we gave the kids' teachers wine that I had made earlier in the year.

We "adults" play a game where we all buy a gift, $25 max., and put them in a pile, wrapped and anonymous, in the middle of the floor. We draw numbers to see who goes first. We select a gift. Open it. and move on. The next person can choose an already opened gift or an unwrapped gift. Lot's 'o fun.

It's a fun game, I've played it. It only becomes disappoiting if some of the gifts are crappy.

But you need a couple of crappy gifts, cause those are the ones that people try to get rid of by "stealing" a gift from someone else.

We have a $$ limit for each child (even though our kids are all adults)and then we spoil the heck out of our grand daughter. We don't buy anything for my mother in law, instead we purchase and provide half the Christmas dinner that is to feed around 20 people. My hubby and I don't exchange for the most part as we buy things that we need during the year, whether it be personal or for the house.

For some of my close friends, I will buy canning jars and put together my favorite cookies or muffins (dry ingredients only) and then label the jar with the complete recipe and adorn it with a small handkerchief and ribbon. All they have to do is add the eggs/milk/butter (or other wet ingredients). The friends I do this for wait for this each year and they often ask when I will be bringing/delivering the recipe. It is a neat idea that I joined into at my last job. Each jar usually makes one batch of whatever I am giving out.
