1 Kudos to IGA - Avoiding the 5 cent bag fee on Sun Dec 12, 2010 2:37 am

If you shop at IGA which is owned by Sobeys, you have the option of having your groceries bagged using ... paper bags.

Just like more than 30 years ago.

No 5 cent / bag fee.

True environmentalism. Not the Fake kind.

I bet you that 5 cent fee has cut down a lot of plastic use, but I shop sometime at Cantor's and they are not charging any fees for bagging .
Of course no one has complained that the fee is just a rip-off because there is no harm in a warming climate.
I look outside at the -28, -38 with wind-chill and wonder why anyone in Wpg would even bother!

Funny at our store it has cut bag use by a quarter so it works but then might be cause most Wpgers are to cheap to spend a nickle too.

I heard that stores would no longer be allowed to sell or give out plastic bags after Jan. 1st. Anyone else hear this? I can't find any info on it.

I sometimes use the large cloth bags rather than the store-provided plastic bags. This is mostly a productivity issue for me - I can fit much more groceries etc. into one of those bags over the small, prone to rip plastic bags.

The fact that it is better for the environment is a bonus for moi.

I bought a bunch of heavy plastic ones from Stupidstore a few years ago...they're still going strong. We have a couple of cloth ones too but I like the washability of plastic.

My pet peeve is why can't they just assume you want the bag unless you tell them otherwise? Shoppers drug mart seems to be the worse for this, if I have a basketfull of various small items do you really think I don't want a bag? Seriously? How the heck do you expect me to take my sutff out of the store? I'd rather all the stores just automatically started bagging my stuff unless I tell them otherwise. Really, the nickel times 5 or 6 bags is not going to influence my decision in the slightest bit.

I tried going to the reusable bag's, but I gotta be honest I'm just way too lazy to have one more thing to remember when I go shopping. 90% of the time they never made it out of the car.

I hear ya...it took me forever to remember to bring the bags into the store with me. That's why I have about a dozen of those heavy plastic ones....occasionally still left in the car. Smile

Yup, me too. I more often forget to not only bring the reusable cloth bags into the store with me. I most often forget to bring them into the car with me...

My wife has accumulated about 6 cloth bags, so if I forget when I go in, I just bag the groceries while loading them in to the car.
None of this is great news, but overall, cutting down on waste is a hell of a good idea!
That is why I try to burn off my cigars and cigarellos.

You know, if you just got the right purse, you wouldn't have to worry about forgetting the bags - just keep one in the purse! If you ever need a new purse, I'm your gal. I can even help you pick a shade that accentuates your skin tones.

I enjoy walking out of the Bay or Sears and being stopped by security to show my receipt because I don't have a bag. They always seem to have lots of security on but try to find an open cashier, near impossible
I would like them to ban plastic bags, do what Costco does, either bring your own or we may have a box for you

I've been using the re-usable bags for some time, they're great. Used to forget them at home when I went shopping, so, like others, I carry a few in the car. Now I just forget them in the car. Its not a perfect solution, but its a start.

I am trying to shop at store that provide plastic bags as much as I can and also maximize the number of bags that I can get. Just came back from vacation in US with plastic bags stuffed everywhere. Plastic grocery bags are essential for me to line my garbage cans, and they were also very useful for poop scooping when I had dogs. They serve as lunch bags. If grocery bags are no longer supplied I will have to spend money on bags, as paper bags will not serve the purpose. Of course could also through my garbage out the window and dog owners could stop scooping poop.

Sobeys has the best reusable bags. 99 cents each and they replace them for free if they start to fall apart.

I like the large rectangle design. I can get 2 4L milk jugs into the bottom of one and still pile groceries on top of them. They also stand nicely in the trunk of the car.

A week worth of groceries for my family is never more than 3-4 bags full.

heh. I do it ALL the time.

I also use a similar line when they are asshat enough not to have prices up or anywhere on the items and no sales people nearby to help.
