1 Poisonous Bromine Added to MB Hydro Waterfall on Tue Jan 18, 2011 5:31 pm

I was in the Manitoba Hydro Tower late this afternoon to drop off my hydro payment.

Since the building was opened this is only been my 2nd time in the lobby area.

The first time I was in there there were several tables set up for something.

This time there wasn't, so it was a slightly different experience being there...

So I'm in the lobby, AND I'm noticing the waterfall...that it's lit up blue colour, and taking in how big this water machine is...and how the energy of the water is flowing down...

Then I noticed another thing...the water has a 'scent'. It can be described something like dirty city water - like the algae tap water you'd smell if you had opened the tap in the Summer previous to the new water treatment plant opening.

So I mozy on down to the security desk, and ask the guy there..."I just noticed that there's a scent to the waterfall..."

He then says something startling..."Yeah, they ADD Bromine in the water to...". I couldn't remember the reason he gave for our public electrical utility, Manitoba Hydro, for putting a substance which causes Thyroid hormone to decrease in one's body.

I asked him how long he's worked there and how he feels after work...He says he feels tired...

So Thanks Manitoba Hydro for poisoning your employees and staff...

Really!

http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=bromine+thyroid&ei=UTF-8&fr=moz35

Bromine suppresses/reduces/takes away/zaps the thyroid hormone in the body..

Thyroid function is responsible for our metabolism, our immune system, our body's temperature regulator, etc...

Now, how do we advocate to get this S**t out of that waterfall before it makes the humans working there even more sick?

I tell you, if it were me, I wouldn't want to work there.

Was aware of Bromide/Bromine in bread flour because during my reasearch on Hypothyroid (low thyroid hormone) some web articles say that Bromide/Bromine has now replaced Iodine in bread flour for the past 20+ years and this substance has caused thyroid hormone to be "stolen" from our body.

Could someone get this water tested to prove this?

Maybe what the guy meant was they added Brine to the water?

http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=what+is+brine%3F&ei=UTF-8&fr=moz35

Either way, that waterfall stinks.

QueryCat: - Cleaning the Brine Tank?

And even if it were so that they were adding Brine (sodium?) to the waterfall water, why not just leave the water alone and push thru pure distilled water instead?

Yeah, this is the type of allegation that you might want to get a better source for the info and make sure it's accurate....

I agree. Check it out more as I somehow can't see a mistake like that happening.

I wouldn't at all be surprised if they added something to the water....probably making the pool a salt water poll rather than having to adde chlorine. Just my guess.

Does it smell like the sea Billy?

Tell you what...I know the H&S Rep for Hydro (the top two actually...play golf with them now and then).

I'll forward this information to them as a query to look into.

Bromine's used in swimming pools and hot tubs pretty often. Like everything it all depends on how much you use. Wouldn't surprise me if they used it to kill bacteria in the water instead in chlorine because it doesn't have a strong a smell. But if the water smells like algae, it sounds like they aren't actually using anything or not enough of it.

The house I recently owned had a hot tub. I used bromine in it. I found it preferable to chlorine.
