Statistics Show Increase Of 16,900 Manitobans in 2010

Manitoba has grown by 100,000 people over the last 11 years,
Entrepreneurship, Training and Trade Minister Peter Bjornson announced
today.

Statistics Canada figures show, as of Jan. 1, 2011, Manitoba's
population reached 1,243,700, representing a growth of 100,035 people
since the fall of 1999. This was an increase of 16,900 people over the
last 12 months, the province's best population growth in nearly 40
years.

"Each day, more and more people are making the move to Manitoba because
they know that our province is an attractive and affordable place to
work, live and raise a family," said Bjornson. "Our government's
Provincial Nominee Program has been very successful, accounting for
three-quarters of all immigration to Manitoba."

This growth is more than double the current population of the City of
Brandon. Previously it took Manitoba nearly 18 years to add more than
100,000 residents, the minister said.

Manitoba population growth rates of 1.38 and 1.28 per cent in the last two years, respectively, exceeded the Canadian average.

People are moving to Manitoba from around the world to drive this
record-breaking growth, the minister said. A total of 15,805 immigrants
arrived in Manitoba in 2010. The statistics show this was well ahead of
the 13,520 who arrived in 2009 and the largest immigrant arrival since
1946.

Other information released showed:

Manitoba posted the fastest population growth in the country in the
fourth quarter of 2010, with an increase of over 3,600 (0.3 per cent).
Net international migration (an increase of 2,600) was the principal
factor for the growth in the province.

Total net inflow to Manitoba from other jurisdictions in the fourth
quarter of 2010 was 2,407. This gave Manitoba the highest quarterly net
migration rate per capita of any province.

During 2010, there were 16,143 newborns in Manitoba. Not since 1994 have there been so many births in a 12-month period.

WINNIPEG - Manitoba posted the fastest population growth in the country in the fourth quarter of 2010.
Statistics Canada reported this morning that Manitoba’s population grew by 3,600 from October to December, a 0.3 per cent increase.

Manitoba’s population as of Jan. 1 was 1,243,700.

Manitoba’s rate of population growth was one-tenth of a percentage greater than several other provinces, including:
Saskatchewan — real increase of 2,300, total population 1,052,000.
Alberta — real increase of 7,700, total population 3,742,800.
Prince Edward Island — real increase of 240, total population 143,481.

Statistics Canada attributed Manitoba’s population growth primarily to net international migration — more people moved to Manitoba from outside the country than left here.

Manitoba’s growth during the third quarter outpaced the national growth rate of 0.1 per cent.

Statistics Canada reports the country’s population as of Jan. 1 as 34,278,406.

This was all the Free Press ran yesterday in their in-depth examination of the growth in population.

Why do you suppose they ignored a more concerning trend? According to brodbeck Manitoba still lost almost 3,000 people to other provinces. I'm quite certain I know why the NDP would gloss that over.

What drives this exodus?

Certainly income is one. Even if the average Manitoban earns the same money as an Albertan or a Saskatchewanite, the NDP taxes the bejesus out of us.

Business may be growing in Manitoba, imagine if there was a government in place that did not scare away business? Union loving, tax happy governments do not inspire business people to locate in such an environment.

Crime and the other obvious problem (perception, real or imagined) makes people just plain uncomfortable. This may not be on the provincial government but they contribute to it. Partly by a real lack of doing nothing (selinger not inspiring Layton into playing nicely on the justice file) and partly pandering to the other obvious problem.

Time for a real change.

The government of the day must introduce solutions that create an environment that does not allow the criminal element to flourish. They also need to work more actively with other governments to help manage the other obvious problem more effectively.

The government of the day must become more business friendly as well. After al the only real growth we can expect in Manitoba is business and the jobs they create.
